Cake Decorating Tips That The Experts Use

A couple of Cake decorating tips that the experts use and you should use to.

Tip Number 1.

Have you ever wondered how people get a super smooth frosting as a base to place their cake decorating ideas on?

Well there is a technique the experts use called a "Crumb Coat." What they do is frost their cakes more than once. They place a thin layer of frosting over the cake first. This first thin layer shows all the cake crumbs that get stuck in the frosting. So once they have frosted the cake with the crumb coat they leave it to start setting hard, after it has hardened, they frost the cake again. The second frosting layer is a thick coat of frosting and you will find that no crumbs appear in the second frosting because they have been taken care of by the experts crumb coat!

Little tip.... If you find it taking a long time for your crumb coat to set, then pop it into the freezer for a while, that will shorten the frosting setting time quite considerably.

There you have it! A super smooth frosting base for you to start decorating and piping.

Tip Number 2.

The 2nd of my cake decorating tips that the experts use is one that I had to learn the hard way. Never, never, ever lend out your best cake decorating reference books to anyone, not even family or friends. I have now replaced my all time great decorating book, (Professional Cake Decorating Tips) several times, but never again. Every time it has been borrowed it has never been returned to me. When inquiries have been made as to it's where-abouts a cloud of confusion and forgetfulness has befallen the borrower, nothing short of armed violence and the threat of bodily harm is going reinstate their memory and force them to give it up.

This book has taught me so much and reminded me of many things I had forgotten. It is my trusty kitchen friend which I frequently reference when I am a little stuck or searching for ideas. Never will this book leave my kitchen again. In fact I am seriously considering having camera surveillance covering it and a tracking device installed.

BTW. An extra little tip.... Don’t throw away your old mustard or ketchup squeeze bottles, they can be used as cake decorating tubes for some piping. Make sure they are completely washed and clean unless you are after some interesting tastes as well as interesting icing colors.
